Star Wars was the theme of the table occupied by (from left) Mary Almassy, Ruth Anne Welch, Mary McCammon and Gayle Rohner at Sacred Heart Women's Club annual Festival of Tables benefit.

Festival theme tables call for real creativity

Saratoga has so many things happening that it is difficult to keep up with it all. Sacred Heart Women's Club's annual Festival of Tables and Fashion Show was a sellout. Helen Metcalf looked gorgeous in a matching red dress and hat sipping tea at the afternoon event. A great deal of effort went into decorating the 29 tables in various themes. Celia Maglione and Pam Sheehan had a theme table called "No Body's Perfect . . . But We Try." It was a hit, with a do-it- yourself liposuction gadget that was made from a turkey baster. The healthy food at each place at that table was impressive. Serious chocolate cake was served as dessert as a joke.

Lori Fox helped chair the "You've Come Along Way, Baby" table. She is president of the Silicon Valley Charity Ball this year, and her husband, Mike, is on the board along with Saratogans Karen Krueger, Lynne and Nick Streit and J.P. Puette. The theme of this year's ball is "A Night Under the Big Top." The star entertainer is Bill Maher, who currently hosts ABC's Politically Incorrect and is politically correct for coming to the largest charity event in Northern California. The American Association of University Women was fortunate to hear Dr. Shu-Park Chan, founder and president of International Technological University, give his views on Hong Kong's future with China at a scholarship fundraiser at Chef Chu's. The scholarship is for the West Valley College Women's Re-entry Program, to be awarded to a woman who is majoring in math or science and plans to transfer to a college or university.

Do you always know which fork to pick up? How do you properly eat a Cornish game hen without sending it into orbit? The Historical Museum walking tours (free of charge) originated by Jackie Welch started the first Sunday in April. The walks are scheduled the first Sunday of every month through November at 2 p.m. Ron and Linda Hagelin are walking tour co-chairpersons. It's a great tour!

There were several parties celebrating St. Patrick's Day. More than 100 people attended the Senior Center fundraiser put on by the De Anza Kiwanis Club. Dick Angus, president, Pete Joachin, Bud Johnson and Jack Cherning are Saratogans who helped. Dolores Lopez was wearing a pin that said, "I'm Irish and I am beautiful."

Vic and Anne Zane were among numerous Saratogans celebrating with corned beef and cabbage at the Bank in town.

Several of former City Manager Harry Peacock's friends and associates hosted a Peacock roast for him at the Senior Center. Former mayor Ann Marie Burger was emcee. Dick Wood said he was sorry he wouldn't have a fourth for tennis, since Harry would be playing tennis with Demi Moore in Malibu. The City Managers Association presented Harry with a beach towel, a director's chair and sun block. Sheriff Charles Gillingham gave him a sweatshirt punctured with bullet holes. There was lots of kidding along with numerous accolades, including praise from members of the City Council that first hired Harry: David Moyles, Ginny Fanelli, Joyce Hlava and Marty Clevenger.
