    Soiree Musicale plays in Saratoga

    Soiree Musicale, a San Jose-based chamber music group, performs April 11 at 7:45 p.m. at the Carriage House Theatre at Montalvo, 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga. The featured musicians are Brian Bensing on flute, Charlotte McManus on clarinet, Kai Chi Zhu on piano and the Klarinet Kapers Quartet. The program includes music by Danzi, Ibert, Webster, Villa Lobos, J.S. Bach, Corelli and Crusell.

    A reception with the artists follows the performance. There is no admission charge, though donations are accepted. Everyone is asked to bring a finger food or non-alcoholic beverage to share for the reception

    Soiree Musicale has promoted chamber music through free concerts every two months since its 1975 inception. For more information, call 408.269.2137.

    Hakone hosts workshop

    As part of the ongoing programs it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens hosts a workshop on painting and poetry, titled "Along the Garden Path," on April 19 and 20. Karen Nagano, visual artist and poet, and Elliot Roberts, teacher, poet, translator and critic, will lead the workshop.

    The hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and the cost is $120 per person. Participants should bring a salad to share at lunch. Hakone Gardens is at 21000 Big Basin Way. To register, call Nagano at 831.753.2618.

    Rec department will take a trip

    The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations for an April 24 day trip to the Western Railway Museum. The museum's train runs south through scenic Solano County to the Mt. Diablo Outlook, where passengers can see flocks of sheep, views of Suisun Bay and the historic Shiloh Church, built by Civil War veterans. A hosted lunch in Rio Vista follows. After lunch is a tour of the Jelly Belly Candy Company factory in Fairfield, complete with jellybean tasting.

    The trip is open to adults of all ages. Early reservations are recommended, as are good walking shoes. The cost is $49 per person. For more information, call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249.
