Breitenbach wins, but Falcons lose

By Dick Sparrer

David Breitenbach won two events, but the Saratoga boys' swimming team dropped a 93-82 decision to Los Altos last week to slip to 1-3 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Breitenbach won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.24 and he took the 500 free in 5:36.16. Jaison Carter added a first in the 200 individual medley in 2:13.91 for Saratoga's only other victory of the day.

Saratoga's only win in league competition so far was an 89-76 victory over Mountain View.

Breitenbach and Todd Combellick were each double winners for the Falcons. Breitenbach was tops in the 200 IM (2:21.66) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.82), and Combellick took the 200 free in 1:51.97 and the 100 free in 50.44. Combellick also joined with Gur Doitel, Simon O'Connell and Chris Yamaguchi for a win in the 200 free relay in 1:44.70, and with Breitenbach, Carter and David Prendergast for a first in the 400 free relay in 3:42.11.

Carter was a winner in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.27 and Prendergast took the 500 free in 5:36.80.

Saratoga has moved up the De Anza Division after winning the El Camino crown with a 7-0 dual meet record a year ago.

"We hope to do well with a very young team," caoch Julie Noskowiak said. "We have the talent to finish between third and fifth in the league, as well as qualify several swimmers for the CCS championships."

Falcons fall

Michael Goss and Chung Ho Park teamed for a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 2 doubles, but that was Saratoga's only victory in a 6-1 De Anza Division loss to powerful Palo Alto.

The Falcons slipped to 1-5 in the division and to 2-5 for the year when they lost 5-2 to Lynbrook later in the week. Paul Chen and Danny Myers won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles and Goss and Charles Chang won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

'Toga edges Paly

The Saratoga golf team pulled out a tight win over Palo Alto in SCVAL play week, beating the Vikings by a stroke 215-216 at the Saratoga Country Club.

Scott Richardson and Paul Kim each fired a six-over 40 to lead the Falcons to the thrilling victory. David Bullinger was close behind at 42 with Joonsik Maing carding a 46 and Jonathan Grellas firing a 47.

The win evened Saratoga's record at 2-2. It was Palo Alto's first loss of the league season.

Falcons fall again

Amy Cheng won 15-8, 18-13 in the girls' No. 1 singles spot, but the Saratoga badminton team dropped a tough 90-6 decision to Gunn last week. The Falcons slipped to 1-3 in league play and to 3-3 for the year.

Lucy Chen and Isabel Chou posted a 15-6, 13-15, 15-1 win in the girls' No. 1 doubles position and the mixed doubles team of Joe Yuan and Olivia Chung won 15-8, 15-10.

The Falcons are playing in the De Anza Division this spring after winning back-to-back titles in the El Camino Division.

Senior Jason Chuang joins Cheng and Yuan as a top returner for the Falcons this season. He plays in the boys' No. 1 singles spot.

Sophomores David Chao, Audrey Chang and Jennifer Chuang are other top newcomers for Saratoga.
