Recycle those used telephone books

From now until April 12, West Valley residents can place their old phone books on the curb for pickup along with their regular recycling bins.

In addition, a drop-off site is available for residents of Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga and Campbell at Green Valley Disposal and Recycling, 573 University Ave. For more information, call the Santa Clara County Recycling Hotline at 1-800-533-8414.

Saratoga Rotary hands out $17,000

Saratoga Rotary Club will spend the largest portion of roughly $17,000 in grants with a $3,200 donation to the San Jose Emergency Housing Consortium for homeless people.

Other grants go to West Valley College, $2,536; Hope Rehabilitation Services, $2,000; Saratoga High School Grad Night, $3,000; the Nonprofit Development Center, $1,500; Adult and Child Guidance Center, $2,500; Villa Montalvo, $2,000; and the San Jose Cleveland Ballet, $2,500.

Most of the money is raised by the annual Saratoga Rotary Art Show, held at West Valley College the first Sunday in May. Grant applications are available by writing to the Saratoga Rotary Service Fund, P.O. Box 2353, Saratoga, 95070.

Nominations open for Citizen of Year

The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for its annual Saratoga Citizen of the Year award.

The chamber will honor an individual demonstrating the following qualities: service, dedication, leadership, initiative, responsibility, innovation and compassion.

The Citizen of the Year will be honored at a chamber dinner June 20 at the Saratoga Country Club. Contest applications are available from the chamber office, 867-0753. The deadline is May 8.

Walk helps victims and funds research

An estimated 1,500 walkers will march from the PruneYard Shopping Center to Los Gatos High School April 14 during the national Multiple Sclerosis Society's Walk for Multiple Sclerosis. The walk begins at 9 a.m.

At the end of their walk, participants will eat free Round Table pizza while they enjoy the entertainment.

Last year's walk raised more than $142,000 for support services in Santa Clara County and for research on the disease. For information about registering, call 800-464-6999.

Lecture tour coming of Saso Herb Gardens

On Sunday, April 14, Louis Saso will lead a tour through his herb gardens on Fruitvale Avenue and will identify the culinary, medicinal and ornamental herbs growing in the one-acre gardens. Herbal tea will be served. Admission is free and reservations are not required. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to noon. For information, call 867-0307.

Easter Egg Hunt at Odd Fellows Home

The Odd Fellows Home, 14500 Fruitvale Ave., stages its annual Easter Egg Hunt for Saratoga children on Easter Sunday, April 7, at 11 a.m.

Last year, some 250 children hunted for candy eggs. This year, there will be 12 grand-prize eggs hidden. The Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled to be over by noon.
