Run to the Stars

The annual Run to the Stars returns to Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Saratoga on April 28. The 3K race begins at 8:30 a.m. with the 8K race to begin at 9 a.m. The registration fee is $14 by April 19 ($9 for each child under 17 registering with an adult), or $17 on race day. Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. For more information, call 732-9486.

Top scholar-athletes

The Saratoga girls' basketball team did fine on the court this past winter--but the Falcons did great in the classroom!

The Saratoga girls won the Central Coast Section Winter Season Scholastic championship in basketball, posting a solid 3.7790 collective grade point average. The outstanding scholar-athletes were presented a team trophy and individual certificates from the CCS for winning the honor.

The Saratoga wrestling team also finished high on the scholastic list. The Falcons finished fifth in the CCS with a 3.2830 GPA.

Lady Vikings split

The West Valley Community College women's softball team split in a pair of games in the Southern Division of the Coast Conference last week, falling 1-0 to Chabot before pounding rival De Anza Community College 8-0.

Jennifer Mallon tossed a two-hit shutout in the win over the Dons. Jennifer Ellinger doubled and singled twice to five in three runs for the Vikings and Chantie McDonnell had three hits. Kim Lax and Christine Sentz had two hits apiece and Janna Marquez doubled.

McDonnell had two hits and Jennifer Samaripa doubled, but West Valley lost a 1-0 nod to Chabot despite a two-hitter by Mallon.

The Vikes opened the West Valley Tournament with three straight wins last weekend, beating Sacramento City College 2-1, Contra Costa College 7-1 and the College of the Siskyous 6-0.

McDonnell singled and doubled and Marquez ripped a double to help make Mallon a winner against Sac City.

Julia Silvestre was the winning pitcher and Lax had three hits in the win over Contra Costa. Marquez and Autumn Kanemoto added two hits apiece and Ellinger drove in three runs.

Mallon tossed a two-hit shutout and Marquez had three hits to knock in three runs in the win over COS. Lax slapped three hits, McDonnell and Ellinger had two apiece and Tracy Micheletti tripled.

The Vikings are now 22-5 for the year and 8-2 in conference play.
