Haynes tosses Warriors to win over the Saints

    By Dick Sparrer

A week that started out so well ended on a losing note for the Westmont baseball team.

The Warriors edged Santa Teresa 5-4 early in the week to improve their record to 5-2 in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, but they slipped to 5-4 with back-to-back losses to Valley Christian and Leigh.

Junior right hander Mike Haynes went the distance to toss Westmont to the 5-4 win over Santa Teresa. Haynes, now 3-2 for the year, had great control, allowing no walks in the win.

Colin McAvoy and Chris Snyder ripped two hits apiece for the Warriors. Mike Gorski doubled home a couple of runs and Bill Stouffer ripped a double.

Things didn't go as well against Valley Christian. Jacob Goytia ripped a home run, but VC pounded a pair of four-baggers in the 6-3 win.

Stouffer singled and doubled for Westmont, and McAvoy and Gorski had two hits apiece.

The week ended with a lopsided 17-4 loss to Leigh. Ben Peterson blasted a homer for the Warriors and Travis Cheney had two hits.

Westmont, now 5-4 in the division and 9-7 for the year, was to meet Oak Grove on Monday and will host Leland on April 6, 3:30 p.m.

Over in the Santa Teresa Division, Prospect split a couple of games last week. The Panthers lost a tough 3-2 nod to Piedmont Hills, but outslugged Independence 14-12.

Curtis Wills had four hits, including a double, to knock in four runs in the win over the 76ers. Myke Gordon had three hits to drive in two runs, and also came on as a relief pitcher to pick up the save. Steven Vidal was the winning pitcher, running his record to 2-0.

Brent Maselli singled and doubled in the win, and Andrew Meade had two hits to plate two runs. J.D. Mazzuca also had two hits.

The Panthers, now 3-5 in the division and 4-9 for the year, had lost 3-2 to Piedmont Hills to open the week. Nick Graydon doubled in the loss.

Saratoga, meanwhile, lost a couple of close decisions in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week. The Falcons lost a tough 4-2 nod to Los Gatos, then lost a 2-1 squeaker to Milpitas.

Sophomore Brett Behnke was tagged with the tough mound loss against Gatos. The Cats had just five hits in the game, but they rallied for two runs in the second and two more in the third to clinch the win. Saratoga could manage just two runs in the fourth.

Scott Moran ripped a double in the game for the Falcons.

Justin Oliver was the hard-luck loser in the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Milpitas later in the week.

Oliver helped his own cause at the plate with a couple of hits for the Falcons. Kyle Lounderback had two hits and Todd Ziegler doubled.

The clubs each scored in the third, but Milpitas broke the 1-1 tie with the run that proved the game winner in the sixth.

The Falcons slipped to 2-6 in the division with the two losses.

Over in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL, Lynbrook split a pair of decisions, the Vikings stretching their record to 3-4-1 in league play.

The Vikes, 4-6 for the year, outslugged Mountain View 8-4 to open the week, then lost 10-4 to Los Altos two days later.

Jeff Seip had two hits to drive in three runs and Amir Tahsini singled and doubled to lead the Vikings to the 8-4 win over the Spartans.
