    Local carvers guild to hold annual show

    The Santa Clara Valley Carvers Guild, Chapter 1 California Carvers Guild, holds its 34th annual wood carving show on April 7, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and April 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Prospect High School gymnasium, 18900 Prospect Road in Saratoga.

    The Santa Clara Valley Carvers Guild consists of approximately 100 people who are interested in the preservation and encouragement of the art of woodcarving. Whittling is occasionally practiced, as well. Members range from beginners to lifelong carvers.

    Art group hosts watercolorist at monthly meeting

    The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites the community to its April 12 meeting, at which time Bay Area watercolor artist Lian Zhen will demonstrate how he combines Chinese and Western watercolor techniques to produce his unique, exquisite paintings.

    A physician in his native China, Zhen earned a bachelor's degree in painting and a master's degree in architecture, both in the United States. Zhen recently published a book titled Chinese Painting Techniques and also served as juror for the April Open Juried Show at the Los Gatos Museum of Art and Natural History.

    The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. Refreshments will be served. Saratoga Contemporary Artists is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each other's works and occasionally paint together.
