Students sought for Japanese exchange program
The City of Saratoga and the Saratoga Sister City Organization, in cooperation with Muko-Shi--Saratoga's sister city in Japan, is conducting the 14th annual student exchange program in late July of 1999. Four students from the Saratoga area will visit Muko-Shi as ambassadors and live in the homes of the four Muko-Shi students, who will then make a reciprocal visit to Saratoga to stay with those students' families. Local Red Cross offers disaster education course
In light of April being Earthquake Preparedness Month, the Santa Clara Valley chapter of the American Red Cross presents a course titled Living with Earthquakes on April 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the chapter's offices at 2731 N. First St. in San Jose. Topics covered include creating a family disaster plan, putting together a disaster supplies kit, personal survival tips, how earthquakes occur and how to reduce fear and increase ability to cope during and after an earthquake. The instructor is Donna Brand, the Santa Clara Valley chapter's community preparedness specialist. Rec Department classes focus on yoga and dance
Among its many spring classes and workshops, the Saratoga Recreation Department offers classes on yoga and international dance. The yoga classes, for adults only, begin April 12 and run for six weeks. Instructor, Nancy Portugal Jamello, teaches a contemporary blend of traditional and non-traditional Hatha Yoga. Participants should wear loose, layered clothing and bring a large towel or a small blanket.
The dance classes celebrate the rhythm of life and communal dancing, using music from Africa, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Participants with chant, sing and learn traditional dances.
