    Youth sports groups hold
    tryouts, signups, and more

It may be the first week of the Major League baseball season. But there's certainly much more going on for young people in the area. Sure, there's baseball...but there's also soccer and track and field. And it's already time to start thinking about football.

    Soccer Tryouts

The Saratoga United Class 1 (select) under-14 girls soccer club will hold fall tryouts on April 10, 11, 17 and 18. For more information, call Tom Vischer at 371-8342 or John Howe at 741-1543, or check their website at www.justgreat.com/united.

    Diamond Skills

A free Diamond Skills competition for boys and girls ages 7-14 will be held April 18, 2-5 p.m., at San Jose PAL Stadium. For more information, call Laura Hardy at 277-5556.

    Spring Soccer Camp

De Anza Community College head soccer coach Kulwant Singh will host a spring soccer camp for players ages 5-16 on April 19-23, 9 a.m.-noon each day. The cost for the five-day camp is $95 per session, and the camp will be conducted at De Anza College. For more information, call 864-8745.

    Speed City Invitational

The Speed City Track Club Invitational meet will be held May 1-2 at Los Gatos High School for boys and girls ages 8-16. Field events begin at 8 a.m. with running events getting under way at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $4 per event or $16 per relay. For more information, call Cliff Scott at 448-9069.

    Football Signups

It's time to start thinking about the fall Pop Warner Football season, and youngsters ages 8-15 living in Los Gatos, Saratoga and Campbell can sign up as either football players or cheerleaders.

Players must have been born between Aug. 1, 1983, and July 31, 1991, and 15-year-old players must be under 125 pounds.

Coaches for football and cheerleading are also needed.

    For more information, e-mail MA48@ prodigy.net or call 270-1443.

    Campbell Moreland Colt

The Campbell Moreland Pony baseball league will hold Colt division signups for players ages 15-16 Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon in the clubhouse at John D. Morgan Park. Managers and coaches are also needed. For information, call 377-9007.

    Girls Soccer Camps

Presentation girls soccer coach Mani Hernandez, who has taken the Panthers to the Central Coast Section finals in each of the past two seasons, will host a pair of soccer camps for girls on June 21-25 and June 28-July 3.

Hernandez, who led the Panthers to the CCS championship in 1997-98, will be the director for the camps that will be held on the Presentation field. Camps will cover technique, tactics and weight training.

The cost for each camp is $100, and players need to bring cleats and tennis shoes. The registration deadline is May 1.

For more information, call Presentation at 264-1664.
