Measure G discussion delayed

Policy changes to Saratoga's slow-growth initiative, Measure G, will have to wait a little longer.

Discussions scheduled for an April 7 City Council meeting were postponed to an as yet undetermined date. Councilmembers said the issue just didn't seem to fit with other items on that night's agenda, including joint meetings between the council and the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, the Saratoga Business Development Council and the Finance Commission.

The council decided to revisit its policy on Measure G last month after a developer applied to the city to make a change to the city's general plan. Under current Measure G policy, the developer, San Jose-based Barry Swenson, could choose whether to take the land-use designation change directly to a public vote or send his project plans through the city's Planning Department first. Swenson, whose plans called for the construction of an assisted-care facility on Quito Road, chose the ballot.

But the council denied the request for an election, saying that the project was too vague for residents to vote on.

The discussion is expected to be rescheduled for later this month.
