Spaich plan is approved

Plans to subdivide about 19 acres of land between Douglass Lane and La Paloma Drive into 15 individual lots earned approval from the Saratoga Planning Commission on March 25 in a 5-0 vote; Commissioner Cheryl Martlage excused herself from the proceedings because she is a neighbor of the property.

The Spaich subdivision is adjacent to Wildcat Creek and is home to the original Hayfield House, designed by architect Julia Morgan in 1919. The house, which is listed on the city's Heritage Resource Inventory, and one cottage also on the land will remain intact under the plan; another cottage and a single-family home on the site will not.

The subdivision will also include the creation of two cul-de-sacs.

At public hearings Feb. 25 and March 11, the plan received acceptance from neighbors, who praised Pinn Brothers Construction for working with them in the design of the subdivision.

Council recognizes work of advocates

The Saratoga City Council at its April 1 meeting commended the advocacy group Asian-Americans for Community Involvement, which plans to celebrate its 25th anniversary with a banquet in May.

Santa Clara County's largest health and social service agency, the AAIC sponsored a number of conferences, special events and classes in Asian-American history over the years.

The council congratulated the AAIC for its hard work and dedication to the welfare of Asian Pacific Americans.

Playing field fees may go (way) up

Susie Dymoke, president of the Saratoga Little League, is urging parents to attend a meeting Monday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Saratoga City Hall. On the agenda is a proposal by the Parks and Recreation Dept. to raise fees to $20 per head.

The current fee for the 1,200 AYSO and 480 Little League players is a flat fee of $1,500 per season.

Little League president Dymoke, charged that the city is trying to resolve its budget problems by overcharging under-12-year-olds.
