Wallace Hall's bequest helps scholarship fund

The West Valley College Founders/Emeriti Scholarship fund received a $10,000 bequest by the college's first president, Dr. Wallace Hall. District Chancellor Rose Tseng presented the gift to the scholarship fund board of trustees at a brief ceremony. Board president Mel Tuscher said, "Dr. Hall's gift allows us to increase our endowment and continue to support West Valley College students with the same commitment we had back in 1964." The scholarship provides money to students interested in careers that "contribute to people." To date, the fund has provided 20 scholarships.

Argonaut Elementary will honor secretaries

As part of National Secretaries Week, Argonaut School plans to honor its secretaries, Claudia Fortson and Dianne Wall. "In the past, the PTA has planned out the week," Fortson said. "The kids might bring us flowers. When you have 500 kids bringing flowers, it makes for a beautiful assortment. The next day it might be candy or thank-you notes." The Argonaut PTA plans to reserve Wednesday, April 22, for the traditional secretaries' luncheon, at which Fortson and Wall eat gratis with parents and PTA members gathered to honor them. "We have 50 to 60 parents there," Fortson said. "It's wonderful." Argonaut parents who want to make reservations for a seat at the luncheon should call Jan Clarke at 741-0344.

New court reporters

Seven students at West Valley College recently passed the state certification exam for court reporting. Program director Vivian Lock reported that two "first-timers" had passed the exam. "Our first-time pass rate is more than double the average state pass rate, and our overall pass rate is 47 percent higher than the state's," Lock said. The students who passed the exam are Heather Bautista, Berta De French, Regina Hohenberg, Billie La Bry, Linda Laubach, Dawn Timerlake and Kim Whitfield.
