Award winner: Rose Tseng
Tseng named Woman of the YearThe California State Legislature recently named West Valley-Mission Community College Chancellor Rose Tseng Woman of the Year. The award was formally presented on March 16 at a luncheon in Sacramento. Legislators selected Tseng as one of five women role models who best represent achievement against the odds. Tseng administers a two-college district, including West Valley College in Saratoga and Mission College in Santa Clara. Tseng is the second-highest-ranking Asian American woman working in education in the United States. In accepting the award, Tseng vowed to continue her commitment to helping others. "I grew up in mainland China," she said. "When the Communists took over, my family moved to Taiwan and didn't have much money. I grew up in a pretty rugged environment. When I was 19, we moved to Ethiopia, then to the United States."
