Zebb wins in his long jump debut to help Falcons to win

    By Dick Sparrer

Justin Zebb is no stranger to the sports scene at Saratoga High School. He was a hot-shooting guard for the Saratoga basketball team in each of the past two seasons.

But Zebb is new to the sports scene at Saratoga when it comes to track and field. And when the senior made his debut recently, it was impressive indeed.

Zebb soared to a win in the long jump in his first varsity meet, helping the Falcons to an impressive 75-52 win over Cupertino.

Saratoga pushed its record to 4-0 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with the win. The 'Toga girls are 3-1 in the division.

Zebb was one of five Saratoga athletes to nail victories in the dual meet against the Pioneers.

Will Kraemer led the Falcons with three individual wins. He took the 800 meters in 2:05.3, with David La second in 2:05.6, he won the 1,600 meters with La second, and he was first in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 44.0, with Steven Hwang second in 45.2.

"The best race of the day was the 1,600 meters," said Saratoga coach Marshall Clark. "[Kraemer and La] were pressed all the way by [Joe] Lordan of Cupertino."

Michael Wong was a winner in the 110-meter high hurdles in 18.5, with Hwang second in 19.3 and Aaron Blair third in 19.4.

Kevin Bromage was tops in the high jump at 5-8, with Mark Elfving second at 5-6 and Zebb third at 5-6, and Richard La won the 400 in 52.5, with Justin Gardner second in 55.1 and Pat McKenna third in 55.7.

Zebb rounded out the list of Saratoga winners in the boys varsity division with a first in the long jump at 18-7.

John Griffin was second in the 100 in 11.6, and Arnold Chu was second in the 200 in 23.7 and third in the 100 in 11.6.

Jacob Osborne was second in the triple jump at 38-7, Greg VanHoesen was second in the shot put at 39-10.5, Tom Cummins was second in the discus at 106-8, with Jeff McGowan third at 100-8, and Maximillian Tam was third in the 3,200 meters at 12:15.

    Follmar leads girls

Alicia Follmar joined Kraemer as a triple-winner for the Falcons. The freshman won the 1,600, 3,200 and high jump to lead the Saratoga girls to a 79-48 win over Cupertino.

    E. Aura, Pfeifer, Talreja and Smith teamed for a win in the 4x100 relay in 51.6.

    Frosh-soph win

St. Ignatius won the event with the state's best time of the year, 7:59.78. Saratoga's time ranks second in the state this season.

    Tight win

The Saratoga boys pulled out a tight 66-61 win over Homestead a week earlier, with the Falcons nailing a victory in the final event--the 4x400 -meter relay--to clinch the win.

The same quartet that placed in the 4x800 relay at Stanford teamed to run a 3:36.8 for the win in the 4x400 relay to secure the win over the Mustangs.

Teng raced to a win in the 400, with McKenna third, Kraemer won the 3,200, with Surrette second and Subramaniam third, R. La took the 800, with D.
