Saratoga seniors are Merit winners
Out of more than 1 million students nationwide who took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test in fall 2000 as juniors, 20 Saratoga High School students received scores that were among the highest in the nation.
The National Merit finalists from Saratoga High are Julia Barmeier, Joanna Burgess, Tim Chang, Connie Chen, Amber Haq, Kim Hiscox, Steven Hwang, Michael Juang, Joyce Lee, Arthur Liao, Alex Liu, Jennifer Liu, Kate Loomis, Brian Nguyen, Tiffany Seto, Jeffrey Shiozaki, Charlene Tsay, Gloria Tzou, Tiffany Yao and Irene Yen.
Musicians win medals
Redwood Middle School musicians brought home 32 gold and 18 silver medals, as well as one bronze, from the 2002 California Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Festival. Redwood students also earned "commended performance" ratings.
The students included Lisa Luoh, who played a violin solo; Francis Lin and Joyce Chiang, who played a flute duet; and the saxophone trio of Emily Chin, Albert Chiang and Stephen Huang. Chiang, Eric Wong, Huang, Chin, Taryn Hoffman and Natasha Pignatelli also earned a "commended performance" rating for their saxophone quintet, while Tiffany Tsao, Luoh and Jason Chou earned the rating with their vocal trio.
Redwood wins math contest
Redwood Middle School captured the first place team trophy at the California Mathcounts competition, after winning first place in the Santa Clara Valley Chapter Mathcounts competition in February. Two California state competitions took place concurrently, one at UC-Irvine and one at UC-Davis, on March 16 to determine which four students from California would represent the state at the national competition.
Redwood eighth-graders Darren Yin and David Lee tied for third place, qualifying for the national competition. Thomas Yin, who coached the Redwood team, will coach the California team.
Redwood students Andrew Chien and Anderthan Hsieh also competed in the state competition. Chien tied for sixth, while Hsieh was one of 11 students to tie for 20th.
