School trustees move to match state funds

By Tim Persyn

The Board of Trustees of the Saratoga Union School District decided March 12 to move to a higher priority for state funding from the recently passed Proposition 203 school bond. Although the district will now have a better chance of receiving money from Prop. 203, it will have to match state funds for any bond allocations it decides to accept.

Prop. 203 is intended to provide funding for the facilities of the state's educational institutions.

The board decided to move the district from Priority Two to Priority One. Under Priority Two, the district could accept full funding from the state for any bond allocations, without having to do any matching.

"The bond money is only going to go so far. Unless we agree to match, we may not get anything," said Ellen Tipton, the district's business manager.

Board member Stephanie Petrossi added, "It's really in doubt if we would get any money if we decided to stay in Priority Two."
