Library friends plan book sale, auction fundraiser

The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries invites bibliophiles and casual collectors to attend its annual auction of rare and special books on April 13, at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. A list of books on the auction block are available on the Internet at members.aol.com/BookGoRound.

April 12-16, also in the library, the Friends are holding a used book sale. Paperbacks and records are priced at four for $1; on the sale's final day, remaining books are $2 per bag.

    West Valley stages "Antigone"

The West Valley Theatre Arts Department's spring production of Antigone takes place April 28 through May 6, at the college theater, located on the campus at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. All shows start at 8 p.m., except the April 30 matinee, which begins at 2 p.m.

The West Valley spin on one of Sophocles' best-known Greek tragedies places the action among the ancient ruins of an imaginary pre-Columbian rain forest. It includes indigenous music, sounds and dances that lend a creative new feel to this classic play. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Group discounts are available with advance purchase. For more information, call 408.741.2058.

Olympiad of the Arts is set

The Gallery at Villa Montalvo hosts the photo competition portion of the Olympiad of the Arts 2000, an annual competition open to students in all Santa Clara County high schools and colleges.

The exhibit, which runs April 13-May 7, consists of about 120 entries, with first and second place awards, an honorable mention and the Montalvo Award of Merit in Photography. The public is invited to a reception for the artists on April 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. Exhibit juror Max Crumley and members of the West Valley College photography department will also be present.

The Olympiad is organized by the West Valley/Mission Community Colleges Foundation. Other portions of the competition include writing, poetry, drama, music, sculpture, dance and visual arts.

    Call 408.961.5813.
