    Saratogans sought for Volunteer Week

Community Impact, a Bay Area-based nonprofit organization, is promoting National Volunteer Week on April 19 through 25 with more than 20 local service projects planned throughout the month of April. Each of the done-in-a-day projects takes between two and four hours and includes activities such as park, creek or beach cleanup; trail building; shelter renovations; reading to underprivileged children, and sorting at food banks. Some projects allow children to participate with their parents. Founded in 1988 by three Bay Area natives, Community Impact organizes projects and matches volunteers with community service opportunities throughout the year. For more information, call (650) 965-0242 or visit www.communityimpact.org on the Internet.

Night hike offered at Sanborn Park

The first night hike this spring at Sanborn County Park takes place April 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The hike, which is open to adults, teenagers and children, begins at the Youth Science Institute's Sanborn Nature Center. Sanborn manager Patricia Kucker will lead participants through the darkening forest and teach them how to use all their senses in sighting and identifying plants and nocturnal animals. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost for non-YSI members is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger. YSI members pay $10 for adults and $8 for children. The non-profit YSI's goal is to provide science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's understanding of and appreciation for the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. For information, call 867-6940.
