Measure G talks moved to July

The Saratoga City Council moved its discussion on Measure G policy--originally scheduled for the April 7 meeting--to Tuesday, July 7. Vice Mayor Jim Shaw said councilmembers decided there was no immediate need to revisit implementation policy for the slow-growth initiative because there were no applications subject to Measure G currently in the works. Also, Shaw said the council sent a message to developers apprising them of its March 4 decision to not allow a proposed project to go to a ballot without having gone through the city's planning process.

In that case, San Jose- based developer Barry Swenson had asked the council to call for an election to change the city's general plan for land located on Quito Road. The change would have made room for an assisted-living care facility on the property.

Current Measure G policy, adopted in May 1996, allows developers to decide whether to send a project through the Planning Department or straight to a vote, but California law requires the City Council to pass a resolution calling for an election. The Saratoga council refused to do that in Swenson's case, saying the project was too vague.

Showcase meeting is rescheduled

Permit discussions for the San Jose Symphony Auxiliary Showcase are on hold until the Saratoga Planning Commission's April 22 meeting. The issue was scheduled to go before the commission at the April 8 meeting, but the meeting was canceled because there weren't enough commissioners present for a quorum.

The showcase, which is the symphony's largest fundraiser of the year, is scheduled to take place May 9 through June 8. It will feature a Saratoga home, located at the corner of Sobey and Quito roads, called McNeil's retreat.

Friends stage paperback sale
