Athletic director: Terry Ward
Saratogan to become athletic director at Bellarmine PrepBy John Pancharian Saratoga resident Terry Ward steps up July 1 to become athletic director at Bellarmine College Preparatory. Bellarmine's principal, the Rev. John Murphy, announced the change March 26. "He was found to be in the company of honorable men," Murphy said in a prepared statement when the selection process was complete. "I know Terry will be a fine athletic director." Ward has been a coach for 30 years, 17 of them at Bellarmine, where he currently serves as head coach for track and field and the cross-country team. His record as cross-country coach is 423-30, including a 21-0 season last year that culminated in a fifth consecutive CCS win. This won him the California Coaches Association's 1997 High School Boy's Cross-Country Coach of the Year award. Ward will continue as the team's coach next year. "The greatest reward for a coach is not winning, but rather the process of training and competition that positively affects the personal development of young athletes," Ward said in a prepared statement. In addition to his coaching, Ward is the department head of Bellarmine's social sciences department and teaches California and U.S. history. He is chair of the high school coaches in the Pacific Association for USA Track and Field and Distance Running, and served from 1984 to 1992 on Saratoga's Parks and Recreation Commission. When he assumes his new role as athletic director, he will step down as teacher and department head.
