Expert on violence speaks at luncheon

The West Valley Republican Women, Federated hosts Monterey County Deputy District Attorney John Sarsfield at its monthly luncheon, which takes place April 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Saratoga Country Club, located at 21990 Prospect Road.

Sarsfield is an expert on the subject of juvenile and adult violence and serves on the California Attorney General's task force on gang violence. He is also the Republican Central Committee Chairman in San Benito County.

Luncheon cost is $11. Non-members are welcome. For reservations, call 354-3373.

Local poet reads at Blue Rock Shoot

Saratoga poet Mary Lou Taylor reads at Blue Rock Shoot on April 16 at 8 p.m. as part of the ongoing celebration for The Montserrat Review, an international literary journal published in the South Bay. Open-mic readings follow. Blue Rock Shoot is located at 14523 Big Basin Way.

Taylor, whose poetry has appeared in numerous journals, serves on the Villa Montalvo board of trustees and is chairwoman of the Literary Arts Committee. Her contribution to The Montserrat Review's premiere issue is "Born at the Age of Nineteen." Along with local talent, the journal features poems by the late Denise Levertov, Pulitzer nominee Marge Piercy, translations of Argentinian Julio Cortázar and an interview with screenwriter Buck Henry. Montalvo displays photography entries

The Gallery at Villa Montalvo again hosts the photography component of the annual Olympiad of the Arts, an event organized by the West Valley/Mission College Foundation.

From April 16 through May 10, the gallery will be filled with juried entries from Santa Clara County high school juniors and seniors and students at junior colleges. First- and second-place winners, an honorable mention and a Montalvo Award of Merit in Photography will also be displayed.

A community reception for the artists takes place April 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery, located at 15400 Montalvo Road. For more information, call 961-5813.
