Olympiad of the Arts photo competition

The Gallery at Villa Montalvo will host the photo competition component of the Olympiad of the Arts, an annual arts competition for talented high school and college students.

The photo competition is open to junior and senior high school students, as well as junior college students of Santa Clara County.

The exhibit at the gallery will consist of juried entries and will feature first and second place, honorable mention and the Montalvo Award of Merit in photography. A reception for the young artists will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gallery at Montalvo. Juror Max Crumley and other members of the West Valley photography department will be present.

The Olympiad is organized by the West Valley/Mission College Foundation.

Sierra Club talks about its programs

Sierra Club's Loma Prieta Chapter/Guadalupe Group will hold a program for new and prospective members at 7:30 p.m. April 29 at the Saratoga Library, Fruitvale and Saratoga avenues.

The Sierra Club's environmental conservation activities will be explained in slides and with speakers. Opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, bicycling, skiing and photography will be explained. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call 867-4576.

The Butter Paddle has a record year

The Butter Paddle gift shop had a record-breaking year, raising $141,5000 for Eastfield Ming Quong during 1996-97, up $13,500 from last year's record.

"This has been a successful year in many ways," said Lynda Godfrey, outgoing president of the Eastfield Ming Quong Junior Auxiliary volunteers.

The Butter Paddle, 14510 Big Basin Way, will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. It began in1967 as a small kitchenware shop and has expanded to offer gifts and home accessories.

The Butter Paddle is one of four auxiliary businesses operated by volunteers to benefit Eastfield Ming Quong, a nonprofit provider of health services, along with the Happy Dragon Thrift Store and Village House restaurant, both in Los Gatos, and the Unicorn Thrift Store in Almaden Valley.

Susie Schechter of Los Gatos is new president of the Junior Auxiliary. Pamela Cooper of Los Gatos is vice president, and Debbie Johnson of Saratoga is second vice president.

Johnson is also manager of the Butter Paddle. Julie Wise of Saratoga is assistant manager, and Afton Tuveson of Saratoga is head buyer.
