Darren Ng
Lynbrook High School senior Darren Ng has joined the company of scores of other Boy Scouts before him by achieving the highest rank in scouting--the Eagle award. He passed the Eagle Board of Review 40 days before his 18th birthday, the deadline for eligibility.
Ng, the son of David and Packey Ng of Saratoga, started his scouting career early. He and his dad joined a local Indian Guide tribe sponsored by the YMCA when he was in first grade. Two years later, he joined Pack 566 as a Cub Scout. For his Eagle project, Ng conceived, designed and supervised the construction of a trellis over a sandbox behind the Saratoga Community Center. Now kids at play can be sheltered from the hot sun.
"The biggest challenge of the project was not in motivating and coordinating a bunch of young teens during construction," Ng said, "but I grossly underestimated the time and effort it took to put together the design and blueprints, which involved researching ideas, surveying the site, taking measurements and translating that to a scaled drawing."
Ng, vice president of his senior class and a member of the social committee, orchestrated a fashion show billed as "Unbelievable" on the Lynbrook campus March 8. The production fit the bill, according to critics.
His Eagle Scout Court of Honor will be held at 3 p.m. April 26 in the Fellowship Hall of Immanuel Lutheran Church, 14103 Saratoga Ave.
