Hakone Gardens offers a summer arts program

Everything from watercolor workshops to paper crafts is being offered in the summer Hakone Gardens Arts Program.

Watercolor artist Kay Duffy offers two sessions on Mondays, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The first session has started. The second begins Aug. 4 and runs through Oct. 20.

Linda Mau teaches how to make handmade paper artwork incorporating dried flowers and bamboo from Hakone Gardens. Two sessions are scheduled, April 19 and June 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Marta Szoboszlay teaches a pastel workshop on Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Triton Art Museum, in a joint venture with Hakone, offers a live model studio in two sessions, June 24 through July 29 and Oct. 7 through Nov. 11.

Luanne Nieman teaches a watercolor workshop combining the Japanese arts of Haiku poetry and sumi-e brush painting, on June 13, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Ruth Farrell teaches how to transform paper into gift bags and boxes on June 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Patricia Allen teaches water media using Hakone Garden's texture and shape varieties on June 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tomoko Murakami teaches Japanese woodblock printing on July 13 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anita Wolff teaches pastels in two sessions, July 15 and Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Kay Duffy teaches collage, methods of coloring and texturing Oriental paper with watercolor, on Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Photographers Bruce and Lynn Bowen show how to photograph Hakone Gardens in two sessions, April 6 and 13 and Sept. 7 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Grace Townsend teaches Japanese quilt making Mondays from Sept. 15 through Oct. 20, 10 a.m. to noon.

Carolyn Fitz teaches sumi-e painting on Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Special events include the Japanese Tea Ceremony with Aiko Tauchi on the first Thursday of each month at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. The tea ceremony is free.

Akiko Kikuchi of Tokyo returns to Hakone Gardens to teach sumi-e painting through a cultural exchange. She teaches on May 21 at 7:30 p.m., and on May 22, May 28 and May 29, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Reiko Orguro of Tokyo teaches a lacquer craft workshop May 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. He will show how to make decorative eggs, dishes, trays and boxes covered with traditional papers.
