Students named to honor roll
Christopher M. Reed of Saratoga, a senior at Oregon State University in Corvallis, has been named to the scholarastic honor roll for winter term.
Jonathan Ben Kaplan, Nicole K. Sugimoto and Melinda Kay Whitney, all of Saratoga, have been named to the Dean's Honors List at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Kaplan is majoring in religious studies, Sugimoto in communication and Whitney in biopsychology.
Student singers earn honors
Saratoga singers Heide Cruikshank and Lauren Van Hoesen received high ratings in a solo and ensemble music competition sponsored by the California Music Educators Assoc. at San Jose State University.
Cruikshank and Van Hoesen achieved the highest rating level of "superior." Both students also received "command performance" citations. Musicians who earn this last citation perform in a concert at the close of the competition.
Both young women study voice with Kara Ireland at the Music School at the Center for the Arts, Saratoga Presbyterian Church, and attend Redwood Middle School in Saratoga.
Saratogans selected for championships
Senior Jack McKenna and junior Dave Mount of Saratoga, both Bellarmine College Preparatory students, qualified to participate in the 1997 Speech and Debate national championships to be held in Minneapolis June 15-20.
Saratoga student places in contest
Angela Du of Blue Hills Elementary School was a winner in a recent essay contest sponsored by the Cupertino Sertoma Club. Her essay on the "Joys of Freedom" won her $15.
On April 3, the club honored the six fifth-graders who won the 11th annual American Freedom and Heritage Contest with a breakfast and cash prizes. The children wrote papers about heritage and freedom.
Saratoga student named to summit
Lynbrook High School sophomore Alison Chang will serve as a youth delegate to a conference on drunken driving in Washington, D.C., next month.
Chang, 14, is one of 435 young people representing each congressional district in the country at the National Youth Summit to Prevent Underage Drinking. The conference is hosted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Eight young people die each day in alcohol-related crashes, according to records kept by MADD.
The youth summit will focus on legislation, the accessibility of alcohol, peer pressure and other topics.
