Hakone launches spring arts instruction program

Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way, has launched its spring and summer arts program, with classes ranging from papermaking to poetry.

A live model studio for artists, cosponsored by the Triton Museum, is offered Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon, May 14 through June 18. Cost is $60 per session.

Watercolorist Kay Duffy of Saratoga teaches plein-air classes on Mondays, through April 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fee is $15 per class.

Kate Curry teaches drawing on Tuesdays through May 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. Fee is $85.

Fawn Christianson, artist, illustrator and naturalist, offers meditative non-impact exercise on Saturdays, through June 8, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Fee is $75.

Watercolorist Jane Hofstetter teaches on Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee is $75 for both days, $45 for one.

Carolyn Fitz teaches Japanese sumi-e painting on Sunday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Japanese art form will be practiced using the "four treasures" of the Orient--ink stick, ink stone, brush and paper.

Ben Liu teaches Chinese brush painting May 2 through June 27, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Fee is $100 for 8 weeks.

Michael Dylan Welch leads a haiku poetry workshop on Sunday, May 5 and again on Sunday, July 21, for beginners from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and for continuing students from 1 to 5 p.m. Fee is $35 for the first two hours, $20 for the second. Welch is the editor of "Wood Notes," the quarterly journal of the Haiku Poets of Northern California.

Ruth Farrell, known as "The Bag Lady" for her talent with paper, will demonstrate inexpensive things to do with paper, such as making cards, boxes, books and gift bags, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15.

Chuck Escott will teach silver jewelry casting on May 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on May 31 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Fee is $25 per session, plus fee for silver used. Escott, a former West Valley College instructor, will teach the craft of jewelry construction and how to make a mold, then melt, cast and finish a silver jewelry item.

Linda Mau teaches papermaking on Friday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. She'll show how to make handmade paper artwork incorporating dry flowers and bamboo from Hakone Gardens. Instructions will include how to prepare pulp as well as how to create custom blends of paper using a variety of dried materials.

Patricia Martin Osburne teaches watercolor on June 7 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee is $35 per day.

Stephen Zander teaches the art of Ikebana flower arranging on Fridays, June 14 through July 26, from 10 a.m. to noon. Fee is $100.

Patricia Allen teaches plein-air water media in Hakone's gardens on Friday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee is $35.

Luanne Nieman teaches how to express ideas through paintings, much like writing essays, by quieting and focusing thoughts, visualizing, studying and sketching on Wednesdays, July 3-31. Fee is $75.

Kay Duffy teaches abstract collage on Friday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Methods of coloring and texturing Oriental paper with watercolor will be demonstrated. Fee is $35.

Plein air watercolor with Marie Gabrielle will be offered Thursday and Friday, August 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee is $40 for one day, $75 for both days.

The basic techniques of applying pastels will be explored with Claire Schroeven Verbeist on Fridays, August 9 and 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee is $75 for both days.

Grace Townsend teaches Japanese quiltmaking on Mondays, Sept. 16-21, from 1 to 3 p.m. Fee is $60, plus $15 for kit and pattern.

Bruce Parkinson teaches beginning pottery for eight weeks by appointment. Fee is $160 and includes materials. Call 264-7024 for information.

A Japanese tea ceremony with Aiko Tauchi is offered on the first Thursday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Cultural Exchange Center, a replica of a Kyoto tea merchant's shop and home. Call 867-9133 for reservations.
