It's a shame to see so little voter interest

In response to Mr.Harold Hodges' commentary ["Concern for Saratoga is alert, unflagging," April 10], complimenting Saratogans on not having voter apathy, I would like to point out the facts of the recent election.

Of the 19,580 registered voters, only 9,519 (48.6 percent) voted. Of these voters, 4,984 (25.4 percent of the registered voters) voted for Measure G and 4,138 (21 percent of the registered voters) voted against Measure G, with 397 (2 percent of the registered voters) having no opinion as shown by not voting on Measure G.

If having an important decision made by less than 50 percent of the voters does not exhibit voter apathy, I do not know what does. It is a shame to see so little interest in government affairs shown by the registered voters of Saratoga.

Easter was reminiscent of quieter, gentler time

What a wonderful Easter it was to see an estimated 450 children all dressed up and happily hunting for eggs at the second annual Saratoga Children's Easter Egg Hunt, held once again at the Odd Fellows Retirement Community.

It was wonderful to see the joy on the children's faces when they saw (and could hug) the Easter Bunny. The enthusiasm and gratitude of both the children and their families were reminiscent of a quieter and gentler time in our city.

A big thank you goes to the 18 members of the Saratoga High School Interact Club who gave up their Easter morning to organize the egg hunt, the games and the photos with the Easter Bunny. These kids were terrific. They were hardworking, kind and incredibly generous with their time. A special thanks to Noreen Likins, their adviser, for the help she gave in overseeing the event.

I would also like to thank Jeff Barats at the Argonaut Safeway for donating candy and the Saratoga Rotary for helping to serve refreshments. A special thanks to the residents of the Odd Fellows Retirement Community for their donation of candy, refreshments and their beautiful acreage.

We look forward to hosting the event again next year so that Saratoga children and their families can share an old-fashioned Easter tradition.
