Mallon tosses a no-hitter for Vikings

By Dick Sparrer

Jennifer Mallon couldn't have been much better than she was when she tossed the West Valley Community College women's softball team to a 7-0 win over Ohlone last week.

Oh, yeah? Well, she proved she could be better. Mallon rebounded from the two-hit shutout to fire a no-hitter in West Valley's 8-0 win over Gavilan to finish the week.

Mallon ran her pitching record to 25-6 with the five-inning no-hitter against the Rams.

Jennifer Ellinger provided all the offensive support Mallon needed with a two-run home run. It was Ellinger's seventh homer of the year.

Chantie McDonnell and Kimberly Lax added two hits apiece for the Vikings and Jennifer Samaripa knocked in two runs.

West Valley, 11-2 in the Coast Conference and 27-6 for the year, had blanked Ohlone to open the week. McDonnell, Lisa McDuffee and Janna Marquez each homered for the Vikings and Samaripa ripped a triple. McDonnell finished the day with three hits and Marquez knocked in three runs.

Tough week for Vikes

Ryan Becks had five hits in two games, but the West Valley Community College baseball team dropped three straight in the South Division of the Coast Conference last week.

Becks doubled and singled twice and Jake Smith had two hits, but the Vikings lost 13-0 to Gavilan last Saturday.

J.R. Ziegelmann and Jeff Canter had three hits apiece and Becks added two hits in West Valley's 7-4 14-inning loss to Chabot. Zorak Abraham and Ken Fukumoto each singled and doubled in the loss.

Nick Dalis doubled, but the Vikings dropped an 8-2 decision to unbeaten Hartnell to open the week.

The three losses dropped the Vikes to 10-9 in conference play and to 19-13 for the year.

Vikes win titles

Christopher Scatena and Jackie McCleary each nailed individual titles when the West Valley Community College track and field team competed in the Ed Adams Invitational at Hartnell College last weekend.

In men's action, Scatena finished first in the pole vault at 16-1 with teammate Kiet Vong second at 15-1.

David Charlesworth was second in the hammer throw with a heave of 163-11 and Jason Yingling finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:57.9. Steve Riddle was fourth in both the 800 in 1:56.78 and the 1,500 in 4:40.4, and Nick Green was fifth in the 800 in 1:56.84.

In women's competition, McCleary raced to a first in the 1,500 meters in 4:47.5 and she was fifth in the 800 meters in 2:28.01. Mona Leon was third in the 5,000 meters in 19:29.4 for the Vikings and Elizabeth Morton was fifth in the 400 in 1:02.76.
