YWCA presents executive award

Deanna Walston, vice chancellor of business services for West Valley-Mission Community College District, received a Tribute to Women in Industry award from the YWCA of Santa Clara Valley. The annual award honors executive-level women who have made outstanding contributions to their companies.

Walston was cited for singular contributions to the district by Chancellor Rose Tseng. Walston, who has overall responsibility for the district's $60 million budget, helped turn a multimillion-dollar deficit into a balanced budget over two years.

The TWIN award program was established by the YWCA more than 10 years ago. The companies that nominate TWIN honorees are recognized for their commitment to expanding opportunities for women in management.

Second-graders get honorable mention

Saratoga second-graders Jesse Lee, Alexandra Conway and Scott Zoltan won honorable mentions in KTEH's Reading Rainbow "Young Writers and Illustrators" contest.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by Emily Ravenscroft of Kids' Clubhouse and children's author Shirley Climo.

"Reading Rainbow" is an Emmy-winning TV series hosted by LeVar Burton.
