Clean Water group asks that residents avoid pesticide use
Four West Valley waterways are considered "impaired" by the state because of widespread pesticide use. The Environmental Protection Agency will ban the pesticides beginning December 2001, but the West Valley Clean Water Program is urging local residents to avoid chlorphyrifos and diazinon--common to commercial pest controls--this spring.
The Calabazas, Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Wildcat creeks have been threatened by high pesticide use in the area. The contamination occurs when the pesticides are absorbed by water and the runoff makes its way into creeks.
For tips on nontoxic pest control methods, call West Valley Clean Water Program at 408.354.5385
