Westmont, Prospect softball teams hold onto first place

    Volleyball teams come up winners

    By Dick Sparrer

Westmont and Prospect both entered play last week as division leaders in girls softball in the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

And a week later, not much had changed.

Westmont won twice to hold on to a share of the lead in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL, and Prospect won its only game to hold onto first place in the West Valley Division.

Lisa Chapman tossed Westmont to back-to-back wins over Piedmont Hills and Presentation to help the Warriors hold onto a share of first place in the Mt. Hamilton circuit. Westmont and Mitty are co-leaders with matching 7-2 records.

The Warriors managed to clinch a piece of the lead with a thrilling 1-0 win over Presentation on Thursday. Chapman flipped a four-hit shutout for the win, pushing her pitching record to 6-0.

Jennifer Brown had two hits for the Warriors, the only hits for Westmont in the game.

Chapman had tossed Westmont to an 11-1 win over Piedmont Hills earlier in the week. Jessica Davis had three hits to knock in a pair of runs for the Warriors. Brown and Laura Phillipe had two hits apiece in the win, and Jessica Cobillas blasted a triple.

Westmont is now 16-7-1 for the year.

Prospect won its only game last week, pounding San Jose Academy 23-5. The Panthers are now 7-0 in the West Valley Division and 13-3 for the year.

Cassie Gilford had four hits, including a double, and Annie Gillespie tripled and singled three times to drive in three runs for the Panthers. Gillespie was also the winning pitcher for Prospect.

Annie Kailbrier tripled and singled twice to drive in three runs for the winners.

    Falcons unbeaten

The Saratoga golf team continued its winning ways in the 2000 spring season with a 204-239 win over Santa Clara in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Sung Kang, Kevin Nabblefeld and Daniel Ruby each finished with a four-over par 40 at the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Center to lead the Falcons to the win. Robert Pfeifer was close behind with a 41, and Michael Mann shot a 43.

The Falcons improved to 7-0 in the division with the victory.

In other local golf action, Lynbrook beat Wilcox 178-184 but lost to Monta Vista 172-179 to move to 6-5 in the De Anza Division, Prospect beat Yerba Buena twice to improve to 4-5 in the Santa Teresa Division, and Westmont lost 201-263 to Valley Christian and to Willow Glen twice to slip to 2-7 in the Mt. Hamilton Division.

    Volleyball teams win

Saratoga, Prospect and Westmont all came up winners in recent boys volleyball play.

Kendrick Askew knocked down 17 kills to lead Saratoga to a 14-16, 15-7, 15-4, 15-5 win over Fremont in SCVAL play. The Falcons evened their league record at 2-2 and upped their season mark to 2-4.

Prospect won twice in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Panthers whipped Gunderson 15-4, 15-6, 15-5 and handled Piedmont Hills 15-4, 15-4, 15-3. Prospect is now 5-2 in division play and 9-5 for the year.

Westmont also won twice, beating San Jose Academy 14-16, 15-5, 15-5, 15-9 in a nonleague match before blasting Branham 16-14, 15-7, 15-8 in Santa Teresa Division action. The Warriors are 8-0 in the division and 10-0 for the year.

    Panthers lose two

The Prospect boys tennis team lost a couple of matches last week, falling 5-2 to Yerba Buena before losing a 4-3 heartbreaker to Silver Creek.

Senior Nevin Morris and sophomore Abrahin Jama came up with wins in each of the two matches for the Panthers.

Morris nailed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and Jama won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, but those were the only two victories Prospect could manage against YB. Later in the week, Morris pulled out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and Jama won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.

The losses dropped the Panthers to 3-9 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.
