Cheng, Alejandro help Falcons race past Gunn

    By Dick Sparrer

Beating Gunn was as easy as one, two, three for the Saratoga boys track and field team.

Or, at least it seemed that way as the Falcons swept two events and won 11 events overall to get on track to an 89-37 victory in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

David Cheng and Jesse Alejandro each won two events, and Saratoga finished one-two-three in the 1,600- and 800-meter runs on the way to the easy win over the Titans.

Cheng breezed to a first in the 110 high hurdles in 16.7 and backed that up with a win in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 44.3. Jeff Verson was second in the high hurdles in 16.9 and second in the intermediates in 44.8.

Alejandro doubled up in the 400 and 200, taking the one-lapper in 53.0, with Andrew Bosworth second in 54.1 and winning the half-lapper in 22.9, with Bosworth second in 23.2.

Richard La started a sweep in the 800 meters for the Falcons. La was first in 2:09.1, with David La second in 2:09.7 and Jake Christopherson third in 2:10.3.

Don Prolo was first in the 1,600 in 5:02.9, with Christopherson second in 5:03 and R. La third in 5:03.2 to mark another Saratoga sweep.

James Cummins was a winner in the discus with a toss of 130-11, Jeff Beyers took the 3,200 meters in 11:08.2 with Christopherson second in 11:08.6, and Ian Jang soared to a win in the triple jump at 38-8 1/4.

The Falcons also ran to wins in the 4x100 relay in 47.2 and the 4x400 relay in 3:48.9.

Jang added a second in the long jump at 18-9 with Steve Chuang third at 18-5. Eric Gianella was second in the shot put at 40-5, and Eric Rector was second in the high jump at 5-4, with Ryan Helmuth third at 5-2.

The Saratoga girls lost 87-30 to Gunn the same day, despite getting wins by Taylor Teerlink, Jamieson Pfeifer and Carol Liu.

Teerlink was first in the 100 hurdles in 16.4. She also added seconds in the triple jump at 31-10 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 48.9. Pfeiffer took the 400 in 62.9, and Liu coasted to a win in the 3,200 in 14:05.3.

Eevi Aura was second in the 100 in 13.2, with Nicola Rooke third in 13.6, and Aura was second in the 200 in 27.6, with Neha Talreja third in 28.3.

Miranda Sun chipped in with a third in the 1,600 in 6:47.0.

Saratoga lost 82-44 to the Titans in the girls junior varsity division, despite wins by Jessica Tu in the 100 hurdles, Adrienne Osborne in the 200, Melody Lee in the discus, Emma Howe in the 400 and Catherine Chang in the 300 hurdles.

Arnold Chu sprinted to a win in the 100 meters in 11.9, but the Saratoga frosh-soph boys team lost 101-25 to Gunn.

The weekend before the Gunn meet, Saratoga traveled to Mountain View for the St. Francis Track and Field Carnival, and the Falcons enjoyed the ride by taking a number of places.

Bosworth, Alejandro and Cheng teamed with Dan Morse to finish fourth in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:32. Bosworth, Cheng and Morse also got together with James Lii for a sixth in the 400-meter relay in 45.26.

Alejandro chipped in with a fifth in the 400 in 50.79, and Christopherson was eighth in the 1,600 in 4:17.90.

In boys frosh-soph action, Prolo combined with the La brothers and Aritoki Suzioki for a second-place finish in the 4x800 relay in 8:44.2.

Chu also ran to a fifth in the 100 in 11.73.

Pfeiffer starred for the Saratoga girls, finishing eighth overall in the varsity 400 in 62.03. Aura added a ninth in the 100 in 13.24, and the two teamed with Nicola Rooke and Talreja for an eighth in the 400 relay in 52.41.

Alejandro and Christopherson won two events apiece to lead Saratoga to a 76-51 win over Palo Alto back on March 30. Morse, Cheng and Chuang were other winners for the Falcons.

Teerlink won three events, and Heather Finnecy won two, but the Saratoga girls lost to Paly 76-46.
