Summer sports camps offer variety of activities

It's never too soon to start making those summer vacation plans, and the same is true for kids who plan to attend sports camps this summer.

A few sports camps have already begun registration for the summer season:

    Badminton Summer Camp

International badminton player and coach Rose Lei will host a summer badminton camp at Saratoga High School.

    The camp will feature classes for beginners (July 6-9, 8:30-10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.), intermediates (Section 1-- June 14-25, 3:30-5:30 p.m.; Section 2-- July 19-30, 8:30-10:30 a.m.) and advanced (Section 1--June 24-25, 5:30-7:30 p.m.; Section 2--July 19-30, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.). The cost is $80 for the beginners class and $150 for intermediate and advanced.

Lei was an international-level badminton player for the world championship Chinese national team. She has been beaten by the women's singles world champion in a competition in Denmark.

Lei has coaching experience both in China and in America. She has taught badminton at Colorado State University and in San Francisco and is currently the coach at Saratoga High.

For more information, call Lei at 257-3098 or email leirong@aol.com.

Camp sessions include beginners, June 28- July 2, for youngsters ages 7-12; intermediate, July 5-9, for wrestlers in grades six to nine with some wrestling experience; and advanced, July 12-16, for wrestlers in grades eight to 12 with two years of junior high or one year of high school experience.

Camps are limited to 26 wrestlers per session. The cost is $110, and sessions run 1:30-4:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call Scott Downs at 395-8126 or 354-2730, ext. 259.

    Basketball Camp

Basketball Basics, a fundamentals basketball camp for boys and girls in grades five to eight, will be held at Westmont High School this summer under the direction of girls basketball coach Jerry Pettit.

Camps are scheduled for June 28- July 9 for boys and July 12-23 for girls. Camp hours are 8 a.m.-noon for players in grades five to six, and 1-5 p.m. for players in grades seven to eight. The cost is $165.
