Saratoga NewsObituariesCharles Hall Charles Roland Hall died Feb. 12 at his home along the Saratoga-Cupertino border. He was 72. A California native, Hall was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Van Nuys. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and became a flying midshipman cadet, receiving his wings in 1945. He served on six aircraft carriers during his naval career and flew combat missions in World War II as well as the Korean War. Hall held a bachelor's degree in meteorology from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and commanded the fleet weather facility in Keflavik, Iceland. When he retired from the Navy with the rank of commander, he began his own personnel agency. He also turned a hobby cooking up gourmet jam into a successful small business. An avid tennis player and skier, Hall was also a runner and competed in eight marathons. Survivors include wife Penny Hall; children Stephen, Chris, Denny, Colleen, Jeanine and Lorene; and grandchildren Kyla and Brianna Ivey. Memorial services have been held, with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos. John Long Longtime Saratoga resident John M. Long, who had been residing in Fruita, Colo., died Feb. 22 from complications of a stroke. He was 86. He was born April 1, 1911, in Mesa, Colo. After moving to California, Long worked as a real estate developer in the Santa Clara Valley until his retirement. One of his proudest achievements was the building of The Saratogan (a condominium complex) on Saratoga Avenue in 1963. Long was a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge of San Jose. He is survived by sons Mike Long of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Bill Long of Sunnyvale; twin daughters Barbara Bornmann of Grand Junction, Colo., and Janet Long-Nicoara of Sunnyvale; and four grandchildren.
