Walk a Golden Mile
Saratoga seniors and friends will "Walk a Golden Mile" as a major fundraising event for the Saratoga Senior Center. The walk across the Golden Gate Bridge will be held May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Participants who sign up pledge $30 and get free transportation and a box lunch.

Hakone benefit sold out
A special May 18 performance of excerpts from Madame Butterfly by Opera San Jose at Hakone Gardens is sold out.The outdoor performance was limited to 100 tickets.
Guests will stroll the authentic Japanese gardens, created in 1916 and restored in 1966, view displays of silk kimonos and Japanese artifacts, be entertained with flute and koto music, and dine on a bento supper.
Honorary chairs are Kent Nagano, music director for the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, and Emily Sano, director of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
New Eastfield Ming Quong board members
New Eastfield Ming Quong Junior Auxiliary board members are Lynda Godfrey, parliamentarian; Debbie Johnson, vice president; Jeannette Barney, corresponding secretary; and Mary-Lynne Bernald, treasurer.
The auxiliary operates The Butter Paddle, a kitchenware shop on Big Basin Way. All proceeds are donated to the Eastfield Ming Quong Foundation to provide mental health services for children and their families.
Brandeis women stage used-book sale
The Brandeis University National Women's Committee will stage its 19th annual used-book sale May 1-10 at Westgate Mall, 1600 Saratoga Ave., San Jose.
Open during mall hours, the Brandeis sale will offer hardcovers and paperbacks, games, puzzles, tapes, records and videos.
"With more than 35,000 titles, this is the largest used-book sale in Santa Clara Valley," said Marlene Kass, a Saratogan and committee co-chair.
The grand opening will be on May 1 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. For this evening only, there will be an admission charge of $5. For the remaining days of the sale, admission will be free.
A silent auction, featuring collectible books, will run May 1-7. Friday, May 9, all books will be half-price. Saturday, May 10, patrons may purchase a bag for $5 and fill it themselves with their favorite volumes.
All proceeds go to support the libraries at Brandeis University. Charities are welcome to any leftover books at the end of the sale. For more information, book donations and to make arrangements for charities, call 867-7462.
Leitners receive University of Judaism merit award
Michael and Susan Leitner will be awarded the prestigious certificate of merit from the University of Judaism at a Friday evening Shabbat service and dinner May 9 at Congregation Beth David of Saratoga.
The Leitners are being honored for their many years of leadership and service to the synagogue.When they first joined Beth David in 1979, the Leitners spent two years as advisors to the synagogue's youth group.
Michael, founder of a technology consulting firm, has just completed three years as president of the board of directors of the congregation. He has also served as chairman of the ritual committee and as financial vice president. In conjunction with Rabbi Daniel Pressman, Michael also taught the most recent adult B'nai Mitzvah class.
Susan, a travel agent, has served as a member of the ways and means, social, youth education, kitchen programming and youth congregation committees. Both have been active in Beth David's Cub Scout Pack 504.
