Loni Burton and the Monta Vista swimming team made a rather big splash when Lynbrook hosted an eight-team invitational last weekend.
Burton won one event, placed second in another and helped the Matadors to a second in the 200 free relay when many of the best teams in the Central Coast Section got together for the weekend invitiational.
Burton breezed to a win in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.15 and added a second in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.86.
Burton also teamed with Erica Ullmann, Rhiaana Richards and Katie Williams for a second in the 200 free relay in 1:44.81, finishing just behind Leland's 1:44.49.
Monta Vista's Francis Tam and Robert Wang each finished second in the boys' competition at Lynbrook. Tam was second in the 100 free in 47.73, and Wang was second in the 100 breast stroke in 1:01.33.
Elsewhere the same day, Homestead's Gordon Blukis and Valley Christian's Jessi Newman starred in the Westmont Invitational diving meet.
Blukis rolled up 403.0 points to nail first in the boys' competition, finishing well ahead of the rest of the field. He finished well ahead Danny Sutourius of host Westmont was second with 253.45 points. Prospect's Aaron Bremmer was third with 241.85 points, followed by Westmont's Matt Talluto, fourth with 236.85 points.
Newman was tops in the girls' division with 424.35 points. Colleen Johnson of Presentation ended up second with 398.90 points.
Prospect's Kim Kelley was fourth with 348.25 points, with Cambra Moniz-Edwards of Westmont seventh (307.50), Kiristi Nabefeld of Saratoga ninth (267.90) and Sarah Mahaffey of Westmont 10th (258.30).
In recent dual meet competition, the Lynbrook swimming team lost twice to Palo Alto, falling 146-37 in the girls' division and 140-39 in boys' action.
Suzannah Johnson and Samara Silverman were the only Lynbrook swimmers who could crack the top three in any event. Johnson was second in the 100 free in 1:01.14, and Silverman finished third in the 200 free in 2:07.52.
Lance Morrill and Scott Anderson placed in the top three in two events each in boys' competition.
Anderson was second in the 200 free in 1:57.91 and second in the 500 free in 5:26.15, and Morrill was second in the 100 free in 54.92 and third in the 200 free in 1:59.17.
Jackie Poon added a second in the 100 breast stroke in 1:05.22.
The Vikings slipped to 3-2 in the girls' division and 1-4 in the boys'.
Lynbrook had lost in both girls' and boys' competition earlier in the year against Monta Vista.
Anderson was second in the 200 IM in 2:16.35 and third in the 100 back in 1:04.83, and Poon was second in the 100 breast in 1:07.95 and third in the 100 free in 57.21 to lead the Lynbrook effort.
Derek Chan was second in the 100 free in 57.09, David Shih was second in the 50 free in 26.63, Morrill was third in the 200 free in 2:03.69, and Jerome Chung was third in the 500 free in 5:44.81 for the Vikings.
For the girls, Kim Mills and Nicole Topham were winners for Lynbrook in the meet. Mills was first in the 500 free in 5:51.08, and Topham was tops in the 100 breast in 1:17.87. Topham added a third in the 100 free in 1:01.70.
Silverman was second in the 200 free in 2:08.27 with Johnson third in 2:15.86, and Silverman was also second in the 50 free in 26.69, with Clair Holt third in 28.17.
Jane Lo was second in the 200 IM in 2:37.42 and second in the 100 fly in 1:10.11, with Kim Orsua third in 1:13.40.
