Prospect ready for final stretch drive in league

    By Dick Sparrer

It's two down and one to go for the Prospect baseball team ... one more round in the season in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL).

Through the first two rounds of league play, the Panthers are 11-1 and lead the pack by a healthy margin. With just six league games left to play, Prospect holds a 3 1/2 game edge over its nearest rival, Mt. Pleasant (7-4-1). If the Panthers can win just three of their last six games, they'll clinch the division crown.

Prospect did better than that last week. The Panthers won four games--three of them in league play--to improve to 14-5 for the season.

Prospect opened the week with an 8-5 win over Mt. Pleasant, then blanked Overfelt 2-0 and beat Piedmont Hills 9-4 in league games. The Panthers wrapped up the week with a 13-4 non-league win over Mountain View.

Steve Vidal got the Panthers off to a good start last week when he went the distance to flip a seven-hitter in Prospect's 8-5 win over Mt. Pleasant. Vidal ran his mound record to 6-1 with the win.

Nick Graydon homered and doubled to drive in three runs for Prospect in the win. Brent Maselli roped a pair of doubles for the Panthers, and Kyle Bonvechio and Ted Piggins each singled and doubled. J.D. Mazzuca and Steve Kinney also doubled for the Panthers.

McPeck singled and doubled and Mazzuca had two hits to lead Prospect to the 2-0 win over Overfelt. David Lenske tossed the shutout for the Panthers, pushing his mound mark to 3-0.

Bonvechio doubled twice and singled to lead a 13-hit barrage in Friday's 9-4 win over Piedmont Hills. McPeck had three hits to knock in a couple of runs, and Andrew Meade doubled in a pair for the Panthers.

Kinney doubled and singled twice in the win, and Nick Graydon ripped a double.

Aaron Jacks went the distance on the hill to flip a five-hitter. He is now 3-2 for the year.

The Panthers found themselves in a tight game on Saturday, but a six-run rally in the third broke the game open and sparked Prospect to a 9-4 win over Mountain View.

The Spartans scored three in the first to take an early 3-0 lead, but Prospect answered back with a run in the bottom of the first and three in the second to lead 4-3. Mountain View tied it with a run in the third, but then Prospect unloaded for six.

McPeck singled and doubled to drive in three runs, and Bonvechio had two hits to knock in three more. Meade singled and doubled, Piggins had two hits and Graydon doubled.

Meade picked up the pitching win, pushing his record to 2-1.

    Warriors drop three

Westmont slipped to 2-9 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL with three losses last week.

The Warriors were blanked 5-0 by Oak Grove, lost 10-1 to Valley Christian and fell 11-5 to Santa Teresa.

Westmont dropped to 7-12 for the year with the loss to the Saints. Bryan Adragna tripled and singled twice to account for half of Westmont's six hits in the game.

The Warriors could manage just four hits in the loss to the Eagles, and they slapped just three in the loss to Valley. Mike Sato doubled for Westmont against VC.

Westmont will try to get back on the winning track this week against Leland and Willow Glen. The Warriors were to visit the Chargers on Monday, and they'll be at Willow Glen on April 26, 3:30 p.m. The following Monday, April 29, Westmont visits Leigh at 3:30 p.m.

    Falcons drop two

The Saratoga baseball team slipped to 4-8 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with a couple of losses last week.

The Falcons dropped an 8-3 nod to Cupertino, then lost 11-6 to first-place Wilcox.

A double by Justin Oliver led a nine-hit attack, but the Falcons were touched for 12 hits in the 11-0 loss to the Chargers.

Wilcox scored single runs in the first and second, then broke loose for four in the fourth to jump in front 6-0. The Falcons fought back with two in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to make a game of it at 6-4, but Wilcox closed out the win with two in the sixth and three in the seventh.
