Three league victories get Westmont in race

They were hovering just over the .500 mark in league play, so the Westmont girls needed a big week to get back into the hunt for the softball title in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

And head coach Jon Hennig couldn't have dreamed of a bigger week for his Warriors.

Westmont played four games last week, and they won all four of them--three in Mt. Hamilton Division play.

The Warriors nipped Leland 4-3 in 11 innings, edged Leland 3-2 a game later and blanked Presentation 9-0 to wrap up league play for the week. Westmont added a 9-3 win over Live Oak on Saturday in the Watsonville Tournament.

The four wins helped the Warriors improve to 15-7 for the year, and they're now 6-2 in division play and hot on the heels of league-leading Mitty. The Monarchs are 9-0 and lead the pack.

The Warriors came through with two big wins over Leland last week.

Katherine Bamford doubled and knocked in three runs to lead Westmont to the 4-3 extra-inning win over the Chargers. Freshman Breanna Kuhny was the winning pitcher for the Warriors.

Kuhny scattered six hits as she tossed Westmont to a 3-2 win over Leland in the next game. Jennifer Brown had a double among her four hits and Bamford bammed a triple.

Freshman Allyson Carrothers tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Warriors to the 9-0 win over Presentation. She pushed her pitching record to 6-2 with the win.

Brown had three hits for the Warriors and Kyle Soden knocked in three runs.

Westmont capped the week with the 9-3 win over Live Oak in the Watsonville tourney. Kuhny tossed a four-hitter for the win, pushing her record to 8-2. Michelle Salmiery tripled for Westmont and Danielle Chapman knocked in two runs.

The Warriors will try to keep up their winning ways this week when they visit Piedmont Hills on April 24, 3:30 p.m., and host first-place Mitty on April 26, 3:30 p.m.

    Panthers split

Randi Gillespie starred at the plate and on the hill to lead the Prospect girls softball team to a lopsided 14-1 win over Willow Glen last week, but the Panthers lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Valley Christian to finish the week with a split.

Gillespie tossed a three-hitter and also singled, tripled and homered to drive in three runs in the four-inning win over the Rams.

Stephanie Nichols singled twice and tripled in the Prospect win, and Cassie Gilford doubled and drove in four runs.

But the Panthers slipped to 6-2 in the division and to 8-5 for the year after a tough 1-0 loss to the Warriors. Gillespie tossed a two-hitter, but a single run in the third would eventually stick her with the loss. She is now 4-2 for the year.

    Falcons win

Susan Franchi doubled twice and tripled to drive in three runs and lead Saratoga to an 8-2 non-league win over Branham last week. The Falcons improved to 9-7 for the year with the victory.
