Redwood School presents 'Oliver!'
This year 150 students will participate in the Redwood Middle School production of the musical Oliver! So the school has divided the participants into two casts and will stage six performances.
The "Charles" cast will perform on April 26 at 7 p.m., April 27 at 2 p.m. and April 28 at 6 p.m., and the "Dickens" cast will perform on April 25 at 6 p.m., April 27 at 7 p.m. and April 28 at 1 p.m. All performances will take place in the school's multipurpose room.
Tickets range from $7 to $10 and may be purchased in advance at Argonaut, Foothill and Saratoga elementary schools, as well as at Redwood, 13925 Fruitvale Ave.
Fariss on SJSU dean's list for fall
Michael G. Fariss of Saratoga has been named to the San Jose State University dean's list. Fariss is scheduled to graduate in May as a general engineer, with emphasis in software engineering. In addition, Fariss has worked as the network administrator for Woodside Priory School and is the owner of the 8th Day Computer Consulting firm.
Redwood wins medals for music
Redwood Middle School entered 19 students and brought home 19 medals in a brass and percussion competition at the California Music Educators Association 2002 State Solo and Ensemble Festival at San Jose State University on March 23.
Earning "commended performance" honors were Annie Batanadies, Matt Buchanan, Rhanda Chiang, Jason Chow, Tiffany Hu, John Hui, Brian Kajita, Victoria Lee, James Louie, Josh Odenhiemer, Kevin Shiuan, Ben Stewart and Chris Turpin.
In all, Redwood won six gold, 11 silver and two bronze medals in the competition.
Sharks recognize leadership qualities
Seagate Technology and the Sharks Foundation recognized 68 eighth-graders in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties this year with 2002 Seagate/Sharks Foundation Eighth-Grade Leadership Awards. Two of the students--Bobby Montalvo of Elvira Castro Middle School in San Jose and Jesse Brightman of Samuel Curtis Rogers Middle School in San Jose--were from Saratoga.
Seagate and the Sharks Foundation presented awards to an eighth-grader at each participating school who demonstrated academic and social achievement as well as leadership qualities.
The students were honored at an awards dinner held March 27 at the Compaq Center in San Jose. Each winner received a plaque, an autographed puck from San Jose Sharks defensive player Gary Suter and four tickets to the Sharks game versus the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 30.
