Jonny Moon earns Eagle Scout badge

Jonny Moon, a student at Redwood Middle School, has earned his Eagle Scout badge at the age of14. His Eagle project involved beautifying and protecting the historic 150-year-old oak tree that shades the student courtyard at his school.

Moon planned the restoration project, found 20 volunteers and raised $200, half the funding required. Redwood Middle School provided another $200 in matching funds.

Moon fertilized, mulched, weeded, installed water-saving drip irrigation and planted protective Japanese boxwood shrubbery around the oak's 21-foot-in-diameter trunk. He installed a 15-inch chain-rope fence to discourage foot traffic from trampling the new plantings and ancient oak roots.

The most difficult part of the project, he said, was digging under concrete for six feet to install the irrigation piping. A total of 150 hours was required to complete this community service project.

To get his Eagle rank, Moon also completed a total of 22 scouting merit badges. He was elected Redwood Middle School student body president and plays school basketball, volleyball, wrestling and soccer while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average. He received an award for excellence in physical fitness for seventh-grade boys.

Richard A. Derby, Redwood School's principal, wrote on Moon's recommendation for Eagle Scout, "The best thing I can say about this tremendous guy is that I would like my son to grow up and be like Jonny Moon."

Moon's Eagle Court of Honor will be held Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 19100 Allendale Ave.

Friends and teachers are invited to celebrate his accomplishment.

He is the son of Bill and Annette Moon of Saratoga.
