Fred Luminoso earns his Eagle Scout badge

Fred Luminoso, 16, of Saratoga has been elevated to Eagle Scout, Scouting's highest rank. He is the son of Fred and Mary Luminoso of 14010 Pike Road.

Luminoso is the 88th member of Troop 535, known as the Trailblazers, to achieve the Eagle rank in the 37-year history of the troop, which is based at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Saratoga.

His Eagle project consisted of repainting the parish office building of the Church of the Ascension, 2033 Miller Ave. Fred and 23 fellow Scouts, friends and parents worked 178 hours to get the job done. Luminoso was responsible for coordinating equipment and supplies and scheduling work teams.

He earned his Arrow of Light in 1991 as a member of Cub Scout Pack 549, based at Saratoga Federated Church, before joining Troop 535. He has completed weeklong summer camp sessions at both Camp Chawanakee and Camp Hi-Sierra.

In all, there are 21 merit badges required to advance to the rank of Eagle. Luminoso has earned 36 merit badges in fields from communications to canoeing. In addition, he has completed two weeklong backpacking expeditions of 50-plus miles: on the John Muir Trail and Kings Canyon National Park.

In 1995, Luminoso was one of the young men who represented the Boy Scouts of America and the Santa Clara Council at the World Jamboree held near Amsterdam. He was one of 30,000 teenage youths from more than 100 countries who attended the event, earning a World Friendship Award.

Luminoso also has earned the World Conservation Award, the Paul Bunyan Woodsman Award and has graduated from junior leader training program.

He is a student at Los Gatos High School, where he has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average while participating in football, wrestling and track. He was named scholar/athlete on the frosh/sophmore football team in 1994 and 1995 and most improved varsity wrestler in 1995-96. He is active in student government as sophomore class president and he is a staff reporter on the school paper, El Gato.
