Central Fire begins Operation Outreach
The Central Fire District this week kicks off the fourth year of Operation Outreach, a program intended to discourage high school students from drinking and driving. Several area schools, including Prospect High School, will stage the program, in which firefighters demonstrate how they use the "jaws of life" to extract passengers from damaged cars and administer emergency medical treatment. Afterward at Prospect, 1995 graduate Karen Cooper will speak about how she nearly lost her life when her car was hit by a drunken driver's vehicle. A question and answer period will follow and students will be allowed to touch cars smashed up in alcohol-related accidents.
