Chamber co-sponsors seminar on labor laws

The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, assisted by the Los Gatos Chamber, will sponsor a program on labor laws May 4. The guest speaker, Joy Hallof, founder of a human resources company, will cover federal and state labor laws that are mandatory for all businesses as well as information on what laws affect companies based on number of employees.

The seminar will be held at West Valley College in the administration building's Executive Conference Room at 14000 Fruitvale Avenue in Saratoga, from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. For members, the cost is $10 and for nonmembers $15. Businesses that belong to other chambers may attend at member rates. The program includes a continental breakfast. Call 867-0753 for more information.

Council passes two motor vehicle laws

The City Council on April 19, unanimously decided to adopt two motor vehicle resolutions, one prohibiting U-turns on Fruitvale Avenue at the median opening in front of Redwood School, and one prohibiting parking along a portion of the northerly side of Saratoga Hills Road.

The first resolution was a reinstatement of a previous rule that expired in November. The city's Public Safety Commission recommended that the prohibition be permanently reinstated.

The commission also recommended the second resolution, which would prohibit parking along the frontages of 20855 and 20865 Saratoga Hills Road, so that emergency vehicles can get through the road safely.

    Council upholds commission

On April 5, Saratoga's City Council upheld a Planning Commission decision that had been appealed by a homeowner.

The Planning Commission had approved a proposed residence on Springer Avenue with the condition that wood siding be used rather than stucco to make the home more compatible with the neigh-borhood.

The homeowner appealed the decision to try to keep the home's plans for stucco. The architect representing the homeowner at the meeting said stucco is both easier to maintain than wood.
