Ricketts stars for Falcons at CCS Top 8
Record survives
another challenge
By Dick Sparrer
Carl Montgomery can breathe another deep sigh of relief. The record Montgomery set in the 100 meters at the first Central Coast Section Top 8 Track Classic back in 1980 has survived yet another challenge.
Montgomery set the mark when he ran 10.4 in the first Top 8 meet, and though the record was tied by Tony Miller of Riordan in 1986, it had never been bettered heading into the 20th running of Top 8 Classic at Los Gatos last Friday night.
And once again Montgomery's mark withstands the test of time.
Not only was the boys 100-meter record not broken at the prestigious meet last Friday, it wasn't even threatened. And that was the case for almost all of the meet records as the CCS closes the books on the first 20 years of the Top 8 meet.
Still, even if the records were not falling, there were some outstanding performances when the best track and field athletes in the section got together at Los Gatos last week.
"There were a lot of state top 10 marks," admitted meet director, and Los Gatos coach, Willie Harmatz.
Ricketts third, fourth
Saratoga's Anne Ricketts was among the individual stars at the CCS Top 8 meet. Ricketts raced to a third in the 3,200 meters in 11:11.8 and was also fourth in the 1,600 meters in 5:10.0.
Saratoga's senior star was joined on the victory stand by teammates Laura Birenbaum and Taylor Teerlink, who each placed in the meet. Birenbaum was fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.03, and Teerlink was eighth in the 300 low hurdles in 48.41.
The three helped Saratoga tie for 11th with Overfelt in the meet's team standings.
Prospect's Anne-Marie Owens and Allison Prehn also starred in the girls varsity division at the Top 8. Owens whirled the discus 112-8 to finish fifth overall, and Prehn went 15-11 in the long jump to finish sixth.
Kim Gleason of Lynbrook pushed the shot put a solid 35-9 to finish fourth in the event for the Vikings.
In boys action, Saratoga dominated the 800-meter run with three Falcons among the first eight finishers in the event.
Alex Daniels breezed to a second in 1:57.51, with Joe Carter seventh in 1:59.69 and Alex Shoor eighth in 2:00.54.
Westmont's T.J. Aimonetti proved he belongs among the CCS best when he placed in two events at the rugged meet. Aimonetti was fifth in the shot put at 51-9 and added a sixth in the discus at 132-6.
Prospect's Anne-Marie Owens and Allison Prehn starred in the girls varsity division at the Top 8.
Owens whirled the discus 112-8 to finish fifth overall, and Prehn went 15-11 in the long jump to finish sixth.
Saladin Washington placed in two events to help Prospect to a top-15 finish in the boys frosh-soph division. Washington was second in the 400 meters in 51.15 and fourth in the 200 in 23.43.
Saratoga's Rich La rambled to a fifth in the 800 meters in 2:02.65, and teammate David Cheng was sixth in the 65-meter high hurdles in 9.94. The Falcons were also seventh in the 400-meter relay in 46.24.
