Saratoga student honored at Brown

Saratoga resident Mary Margaret McMains has earned a place on the Brown University fall Academic All-Ivy Team. The All-Ivy Team consists of students who "complement their on-field exploits with outstanding performance in the classroom." Ten Brown students were named to the team for fall, out of a student body of 5,500 undergraduates. McMains is a first-semester junior at Brown, concentrating in engineering and architectural studies.

Locals named to UOP dean's list

Two Saratoga students made the dean's honor roll at the University of the Pacific based on their grades for fall 1997. Alison Yeung and Clarissa Shetler both earned a grade-point average of at least 3.5 to qualify.

Yeung is a junior at UOP, majoring in biological sciences. Shetler is a third-year student in the School of Pharmacy.

SHS senior scores big at all-star game

Saratoga High School senior Michael Black recently rounded out his high school basketball career as a member of the victorious North squad in the county all-star game, the Santa Clara County Classic. During the game, he hit two key three-point shots, twice stole the ball and assisted on lay-ups. Black has been a three-year varsity starter for SHS, scoring more than 925 points for the Falcons in that time. He was twice voted first-team all-league and team MVP. The North squad overcame a height disadvantage to win the game--their tallest player was 6 feet, 6 inches, while the South squad had three players at 6 feet, 8 inches.

Black will also represent SHS as quarterback in the Santa Clara County All-Star Football Game on Wednesday, July 22, at Spartan Stadium. Other SHS players are Cory Schwaderer, Matt McKenna and Tyler Hooper.

School hosts art coloring contest

Argonaut School and the Art Docent program are running a "Famous Artist Coloring Contest." The featured artist is Henri Matisse and prints of his work will be on display in the Argonaut library. Students may enter the contest by answering questions about Matisse's life and by coloring his famous "Christmas Night." Entries may be turned in to the contest box in the library.

The contest ends May 10.

Matisse is also the inspiration for the Saratoga Union School District's Art Docents project in which students will create motifs on 4-inch square tiles with ceramic glaze. The tiles will be fired and used as accent in new bathrooms built on school campuses.

Retiring teachers will be honored

The Argonaut Elementary PTA will honor three retiring teachers with a reception June 3 at 3:30 p.m. at the school. Nancy Bear, Joisa Wagener and Sally James have taught for 100 years among them, primarily in Saratoga and at Argonaut school.

"We're opening the reception to the entire community, to anyone who would like to come by and say farewell," Cindy Bitner, PTA president, said. To volunteer their time or for information, parents and community members may call Bittner at 867-2933.
