      Homes sought for Russian visitors

A group of adult Russians who own or operate construction firms will be in Saratoga this summer to study the construction business in Silicon Valley. The visit is sponsored by the Saratoga Rotary Club in conjunction with the Center for Citizens Initiatives in San Francisco. Ann Marie Burger is in charge of finding housing for the visitors.

"There will be 10 visitors, and we'd like to put two people in each home," Burger said.

Call her at 867-0242 if you can house the Russians for a two-week stretch sometime between June 4 and July 2.

      Historical walking tour

Historian Willys Peck will guide the next historical walking tour at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. The free tour of Saratoga's past lasts about one hour.

The tour starts at the museum, goes up Oak Street to Madronia Cemetery and down Sixth Street to Big Basin Way and continues to the Foothill Club and Saratoga Federated Church, both buildings designed by architect Julia Morgan.

Volunteers needed for national cleanup day

Volunteers are needed to remove trash and debris from Saratoga Creek as part of National River Cleanup Day, Sunday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to noon.

There are 14 cleanup sites throughout Santa Clara County, including Saratoga Creek at Wildwood Park, at the end of Fourth Street.

The creek needs a "spring cleaning" to remove trash and debris built up during last winter's heaving rains, according to Santa Clara Valley water district officials.

Volunteers should wear long pants, gloves and sturdy shoes. Trash bags and cleanup supplies will be provided.

For a map of cleanup sites, call 265-2607.

The affair is open to animals of all shapes and sizes and is free. Scheduled is a "Paw Course" designed for pets, as well as a pet and owner look-alike contest.
