Webster an All-American
Bryan Webster, a freshman at Santa Clara University, claimed All-American honors when he finished second in the National Collegiate Boxing Championships held in April at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Webster, a 1996 Saratoga High graduate, was undefeated heading into the finals. He lost to a two-time national champion from the Naval Academy.
Earlier in the season, Webster had finished first in the Western United States Championships in Reno, Nev.
Schott speaks at Bellarmine
Steve Schott, co-owner of the Oakland A's, will return to his alma mater on May 8 as the guest of honor at a luncheon at Bellarmine Prep.
Schott is a 1956 graduate of Bellarmine, where he played varsity baseball for three seasons. He won all-city and all-Catholic honors as a pitcher in his junior and senior years.
Tickets for the lunch, sponsored by the school's alumni council, are priced at $15 per person. Tours of the Bellarmine campus begin at 11:15 a.m. followed by a social period at 11:30 a.m. The program will conclude by 1:30 p.m. For more information, call 294-9224, ext. 460.
Vikings win opener
The West Valley Community College women's softball team opened the Coast Conference playoffs with a lopsided 10-2 win over Monterey Peninsula College.
Julia Martin was the winning pitcher for the Vikings, running her season record to an impressive 35-7.
Kimberly Lax had two hits to drive in two runs, and Sarah Dudley, Autumn Kanemoto and Lisa McDuffee each had two hits. Jennifer Ellinger ripped a double.
In baseball action, Ryan Becks tossed West Valley to a 9-5 win over Monterey Peninsula last week, but the win was sandwiched by a pair of conference losses for the Vikings.
Becks tossed a five-hitter, striking out nine along the way. Isaac Yacap doubled twice and singled to drive in two runs, and Matt Troedson singled twice to plate three runs in the win. Becks helped his cause with a pair of hits.
Jeff Canter (Fremont) singled and doubled, and Nick Dalis (Bellarmine) doubled home two runs. Jim Alerete (Bellarmine) also ripped a double.
