Saratoga rolls to hoop title in NJB sixth-grade tourney
Caloairo scores 28 points in title game
By Dick Sparrer
Angelo Caloairo poured in 28 points to lead Saratoga to a 57-45 win over Capo Dana of Laguna Niguel in the National Junior Basketball (NJB) sixth-grade championship game.
The win helped Saratoga wrap up a 20-1 season that included a first-place finish during the regular season, a championship in the Silicon Valley Chapter tournament and a title in the All-Net boys sixth-grade national championship tourney.
Saratoga jumped out to a commanding 36-20 first-half lead in the title game against Capo Dana, thanks to a 19-point outburst by Caloairo and key three-point buckets by Nick Scudellari and Jeff Sloan.
The locals had opened the tourney with a 51-46 win over Trabuco of Southern California. Guards Thomas Reynolds and Sam Scudellari starred in the win for Saratoga.
Nik Balog played tough inside and Ricky Bose and Andy Capek were pouring in threes from the outside to lift Saratoga to a tight 56-51 win over Cypress of Southern California in the tightest game of the tourney.
Key efforts by Stephen Walker, Adam Prewet, Ardavon Jahanian and Mark Kroenung helped the locals to a 62-45 win over Elk Grove of Sacramento in the semifinals.
A week before the tourney, Saratoga won the Silicon Valley Chapter tourney title with wins over Hollister, 52-24, Los Gatos, 59-33 and Coyote Creek, 40-26. The win in the finals avenged Saratoga's only loss of the year, a regular season setback against Coyote Creek.
Eight of the 12 players on the squad were members of the Saratoga team that won the NJB title two years ago in the fourth-grade division.
Lambles win
The Lamble siblings, Kelly and John, of Saratoga starred in recent tennis tournament action held over spring break in Martinez.
Kelly Lamble, 12, won the girls-12 singles title in the tourney, and John Lamble, 10, was a finalist in the boys-12 singles competition.
The two, both students at Foothill School, also each made it to the round of 16 in the National 12 Open.
