Saratoga's Daniel Yao to play for California Youth Symphony
The award-winning California Youth Symphony (CYS), conducted by Maestro Leo Eylar, presents its annual spring concerts on May 12 at the Flint Center in Cupertino and May 19 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center. Both concerts begin at 2:30 p.m.
One of the program's highlights is the performance of 17-year-old flutist Daniel Yao of Saratoga, a student of San Jose Symphony principal flutist Maria Tamburrino. One of two winners of this year's California Youth Symphony Senior Soloist Competition, Yao will play during the Flute Concerto by Nielsen.
Yao began his music career at age 6, when he took piano lessons. Three years later, he took up the flute. Currently a member of the Saratoga High School Band, Yao has played in the California Band Directors' Association all-state band and in the Santa Clara County Honor Band. He has performed with the CYS for eight years-four in the younger levels and four in the advanced orchestra, where he is now co-principal of the flute section.
The program also includes An American in Paris by Gershwin, Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar and Pines of Rome by Respighi.
The CYS consists of 100 musicians, ages 12 to 18, who attend 37 different schools between San Francisco and Morgan Hill.
Tickets, available at the door or from CYS members, are $12 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens. For more information, or directions to the concert venues, call 650.325.6666 or visit www.cys.org on the Internet.
