Chang, who attended Saratoga High School, is majoring in psychology. She's expected to graduate in May 2004.
Lee, who is majoring in biomedical engineering, attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H.
SHS places 11th in math challenge
Despite having half as many competitors as other schools, Saratoga High School placed 11th out of 21 schools at the 39th annual Santa Clara Valley Mathematics Association's Mathematics Field Day, which took place on March 23 at San Jose State University.
At the competition, scores were based on the students' cumulative number of correct answers. Each student took a multiple-choice test in one of seven areas of math.
Seven out of the nine competitors from Saratoga High placed in the top 15 in individual tests. Juniors Jonathan Hsieh and Leonard Wei placed fourth in the leapfrog relay, junior Gary Chang placed fifth in calculus and junior Philip Sung placed fifth in the discovery quest. Freshman Kelly Wang placed 13th in geometry.
Anderthan Hsieh and Darren Yin, both eighth-graders at Redwood Middle School who take the algebra II honors class at Saratoga High, competed in algebra II. Yin placed fifth and Hsieh placed seventh.
Musicians earn high ratings
Judges from the California Music Educators Association awarded eight Saratoga High students the highest ratings possible when they performed at San Jose State University on March 23.
On a scale from "needs improvement" to "command performance," the SHS concert band and orchestra students received "command performance" ratings. The students were Emily and Jessica Chang, Sue-ting Chene, Evan Kutter, Jensine Lee, Alex Shiozaki, Jeff Shiozaki and Ryo Yamagishi.
